By surprise

It's been a good day here. I think I've been fooling myself when I tell myself or others that we aren't really homeschooling yet.  We are.  We aren't doing every subject yet, or using the full curriculum I plan on using, but we are learning and homeschooling.  This morning Rigel did 5 pages of handwriting completely unprompted in his PJs so he'd have time to do other things.  And he did a good job and he was proud of himself.  He wants me to tell him more things that he can work on on his own.  OK Rigel, can do.

Today we did a spelling lesson from the actual curriculum, another "ping" reading, read an AA Milne poem related to water, did buoyancy tests on things found in nature, drew water while looking at the pond including reflections and motion lines, did a page of writing/reading out of a reading comprehension book, read an eyewitness archeology book in prep for our archeology lesson next week as well as 2 chapters about pompeii, watched an hour long documentary on China, examined centipedes, partner read for 15 minutes or so, and went to Rigel's first soccer practice in the rec league.

Meanwhile River had a visit from her new preschool teacher, Faith, who appears to be lovely, enjoyed drawing a "boat" by the water and exploring watercolor pencils, made things float, continued to play her rhyming game, and made all kinds of interesting things out of pipe cleaners while Rigel played soccer.  Oh, and there was much cooking and playdough playing in the newly organized playroom.

It was a nice day.  It really was.  So sure, I'm not using all of my available resources yet...we have yet to start the reading, history, or science curriculums and no, I haven't figured out circle time or a clear schedule by which to run our days, but I am educating my children.  And thus far, a day or two of denial into it, it is going well.  So there you have it.  We've had our "first day" without it being official...I'm not sure which one to count.  We'll probably have an official first day next week when we name our school and come up with goals and all that good stuff, but for now I am teaching our children and I'm really enjoying it!
